It was a pleasure to host a seminar with Sensei Paul Herbert on the 11th May 2013 at the Centre.

We held a Children's competition at The Martial Arts Centre on Saturday 27th April.

Here are some of the children who competed and a big well done to everyone who took part on an excellent day of Karate and Kickboxing.

Police visit TMAC (25th April 2013)

On the 25th April, TMAC kids karate class had a visit from Police Community Support Officers, Gemma Cheek and Jo Cooper.
They spoke about stranger danger, personal/bike and road safety. The police officers also made the children aware that from the age of 10 they are all criminally responsible for their own actions.

They also encouraged the children to think of the wider impact on others of committing an offence, as well as the fact that a criminal record would stay with them throughout their lives and would have a potential future influence on employment, social circles and their ability to travel throughout the world.

The children all felt that they benefited greatly from speaking with the police and wanted to thank Sensei David Wilson for organising the visit.

Jonathan Mottram Interview for TMAC

Following the kata seminar conducted by Sensei Mottram, please see below the interview he had with Helen Marsh, at the end of a great day's karate.

On the 17th March, The Martial Arts Centre Sensei David Wilson arranged a Masterclass of Kata training and drills with National Kata Coach Sensei Jonathan Mottram.

Sensei Mottram has competed in over four hundred competitions. He is England's most successful Kata competitor and holds many titles including three times commonwealth Champion, various European titles, fifteen times English National Kata Champion, eleven times British National Individual Kata Champion, plus over 30 international titles. He has also medalled numerous times in team Kata and is the four times English National Kumite Champion.

Sensei Mottram's passion for karate was very evident both on and off the mat. His coaching left all participants in the masterclass and those spectating in awe of his skills to teach and his ability to perform kata was breath taking.

Sensei Mottram was very happy to share his skills and the reason for his success. He stated that it is due to hard work and listening to his Sensei, even when there were times when this was hard. Even now, after such success he stated that you can still keep improving and will never stop learning.

Originally in Sensei Mottram's competition career he competed in both Kata and Kumite, however, after a serious injury, whilst competing in kumite in America left him unable to train for 12 months he decided to focus on Kata. He is currently learning his 55th kata!

When learning kata's Sensei Mottram starts by watching the people he respects perform the kata. He has a great ability after watching a kata to remember it and start the process of practicing, training hard and listening to his Sensei in order to master the kata. Although, Sensei Mottram believes you never really master it but should be constantly looking at ways to improve.

When competing he decides which Kata's to perform depending on his opponent. After competing so many times he stated that you get a feel for the type of kata that different people and nations focus on, therefore, it is important to apply tactics to the selection of your kata.
On the day of a competition Sensei Mottram prefers to have fun and chill out, this is unnerving for his competitors. Once on the mat he is quick to slip into his kata zone. His attitude to competitions is inspiring, as he states, when else are you able to get up in front of sixteen thousand people and do something that you love, so enjoy it!

The biggest influence in his career is what he calls his 'Karate Dad,' David 'Ticky' Donovan OBE. As he stated, there where times when he hated him for pushing him so hard, however, now he understands and is grateful for all his passion and commitment. Sensei Dave Hazard has also been massive influence.

Sensei Mottram's biggest achievements in his career so far reflect the kind of person he is as they are not all about medals. His biggest competitive achievement, in his eyes, was taking bronze medal in the European Championships 2012, after having enormous pressure on him from critics questioning whether he was too old to compete, and a lot of negative criticism going on over the course of the competition. He proved them all wrong to take a third place. This for Sensei Mottram was a great result and silenced his critics.
Another biggest achievement was during a competition when he did not medal, however, after the competition Sensei Ticky Donovan awarded him his own medal that he had achieved in team kata. Sensei Mottram was overwhelmed by this act as his mentor had given him recognition for his hard work, attitude and skill. Recognition by a man Sensei Mottram looks up to was an outstanding achievement to him.

When Sensei Mottram was asked if he could select anyone throughout the history of karate to be in his ultimate kata team who would it be, he choose two teams, an international team of Sensei Michael Milon and Sensei Junior Lefevre and an all English team of Sensei Ticky Donovan and Sensei Dave hazard. Now that would be a couple of fantastic teams to watch!

Finally, we asked Sensei Mottram if he could give us at TMAC some advice when learning and competing on kata and kumite. He said this was simple, 'just say ossu.' He said we are extremely lucky to have a fantastic dojo and are fortunate to have Sensei Wilson who is a great teacher so listen and trust in his ability. Karate is not about being the biggest or the strongest, it is about technique.

Once again TMAC would like to thank Sensei Mottram and wish his all the best in his forthcoming English Championship in April and the European Championship in May.

Incredible day today at TMAC.

We were privileged to have National Kata Coach, Sensei Jonathan Mottram, attend to teach a masterclass of Kata and Training Drills.

It was an excellent day's training and a great opportunity for our members.

Our thanks to those who attended and of course, to Sensei Mottram!

IMPORTANT EVENT NEWS !!!

RED NOSE DAY IS COMING !!!

On Friday 15th March 2013, we are having a fundraising evening in aid of RND so please come along and support the event if you can.

Mixed Kickboxing and Karate class (should be great fun.........)

Venue: TMAC
Time: 6.30pm - 8.00pm
Cost: £4.00 per person

All ages are welcome, friends and family can take part too.

Fantastic tasting cakes and soft / hot drinks on sale!

All monies raised will go to RND.

Gi trousers to be worn, with a red / colourful top and preferably a red nose, (a false one) !!!

Please come along and join in the fun to help us support this worthwhile event.

Dear Members and Parents

Member Notice: Classes w/c Monday 25th February 2013

Please be advised that commencing next week, 25th February, Sensei Wilson will return to teaching full time at the Centre following a period of illness.

Some of you may be aware a few days after our Student Of The Year Awards Evening he was diagnosed as having Double Pneumonia following a chest infection which he wasn't aware of. As a result of course he was unable to do any teaching and so the assistant instructors kindly covered all the classes.

I would like to pass on Sensei Wilson's thanks and appreciation to the Instructors for all their help and to all the members and parents for their patience. He has not completely recovered to full fitness yet, but will be back at the Centre next week.

We are please to announce that for 2013, the Tamdown group have agreed to renew their sponsorship of Kate Winter.
We would like to thank them for their generosity, as this year Kate will be attending more regional and national squad sessions.
